A bathroom vanity is the hardest piece of furniture a buyer can source, and almost no one treats it that way. It is a cabinet asked to live in a small, humid room, take splashes daily, sit over open plumbing, and survive years of a finish being wiped with cleaning chemicals. Get the wood, the construction, or the sealing wrong and the piece does not just look tired, it warps, its joints loosen, and its edges swell, usually somewhere you cannot see until a door stops closing. Sourcing solid wood vanities from Brazil is a genuinely good idea, because Brazil’s strength is exactly the material a good vanity is built from. But the failure modes are specific, and this guide is the buyer’s map to avoiding them.
Why the bathroom is the hardest room
The problem in a bathroom is not the occasional splash. It is the constant cycle: humidity rising and falling, hot and cold water alternating, water vapor condensing on asurfaces, and moisture looking for any unsealed path into the material. Industry maintenance data is consistent on this point. The most common vanity failures are not dramatic water damage, they are deformation, loose joints, and swelling, and they almost always start at a cut edge, a plumbing opening, or an unsealed back panel. That is why a vanity has to be engineered for water, not merely styled to look good next to it, and why the way it is built matters more here than in any other room of the house.
What a vanity is actually made of
Price and photographs will not tell you what a vanity is made from. The spec sheet will, if you know how to read it. Four materials show up, and they behave very differently once water finds them.
Solid wood
Real lumber has a cellular structure that naturally resists moisture, and its biggest advantage is repairability: scratches and wear can be sanded and refinished, and a solid-wood vanity, properly sealed and maintained, lasts twenty to fifty years or more. For large cabinets, a solid-wood frame is the most reliable structure against load and deformation. The trade-off is honest: solid wood needs sealing, ventilation, and a finish refreshed every few years, and it is the material that most rewards a factory that knows what it is doing.
Furniture-grade plywood
Plywood is layers of real wood bonded together, and in a bathroom the grade is everything. Marine-grade and moisture-resistant plywood are bonded with waterproof glue and have no internal voids, so water at a cut edge has nowhere to travel. For large flat panels and cabinet boxes, veneered plywood is often the smart choice, because it reduces movement across wide surfaces while keeping a real wood core that holds a screw and can be sealed. The quality standard most good vanities follow is simple to state: solid hardwood door fronts and face frames, over furniture-grade plywood boxes.
MDF and particleboard
MDF is fine wood fiber pressed with resin. It paints cleanly, which is why it is common on painted fronts, and while sealed it is stable. The problem is what happens when the seal breaks: water reaches the core and it swells, often irreversibly, at exactly the plumbing openings and edges a bathroom exposes. Moisture-resistant MDF, the green-core grade, is acceptable for painted doors in a well-ventilated bathroom, but standard MDF does not belong near water. Particleboard is worse, the highest-risk core in a wet room, and it should be treated as a warning sign, not a budget option.
The lesson for a buyer reading a spec sheet: the phrase “all-wood construction” does not mean solid lumber throughout, and “wood” can hide MDF or particleboard in the side, bottom, back, or shelf panels near water. Ask what each panel is made from, specifically. If a supplier cannot answer plainly, that is itself the answer.
The species that survive a wet room
Not all wood is bathroom wood. Species move at different rates and resist water differently, and choosing the right one is part of the specification, not an afterthought.
- Best: teak, thanks to its natural oil content, and white oak, whose tight grain and tyloses structure block water penetration. Both can last generations with proper sealing.
- Good: walnut, cypress, birch, and acacia, all reasonably stable and moisture-tolerant with a quality seal.
- Poor: pine, cherry, and poplar, which are soft, porous, or prone to movement, and tend to loosen at the joints in a humid room.
This is where Brazil’s raw-material depth becomes an advantage. The moisture trap that catches importers
Here is the risk that is specific to sourcing, and that domestic buyers never face. A vanity is built in Brazil, in a warm and often humid factory, and then shipped to a dry, heated home in a northern climate. If the wood was not kiln-dried to a moisture content specified for the destination, it will lose moisture after it arrives, and it will move: doors that no longer sit square, panels that develop gaps, joints that open. The piece was not defective when it left. It simply was never conditioned for where it was going.
This is the single most important thing a buyer sourcing wood vanities has to get into the specification, and it is invisible in a photograph and in a sample. A factory that talks fluently about moisture content for your destination climate, and can document it, is a factory that has shipped internationally before. One that shrugs at the question is one to be careful with.
Construction: the quality markers to inspect
Once the material and species are right, construction decides how long the piece lasts. The markers of furniture-grade quality are specific and checkable:
- Dovetail drawers, not drawers held with staples. In a humid room, poor joints are the first thing to loosen.
- Sealed edges everywhere a panel is cut, and above all at the plumbing openings, which are the most common entry point for water.
- A back panel of quarter-inch (six millimeter) plywood or thicker, since the back is often the cheapest and most exposed part.
- Soft-close hinges and slides, and solid, well-applied edge banding with no raw exposed edges.
- A multi-coat, catalyzed or marine-grade finish, sealed on every face including the inside, because an unsealed interior face is an open door for moisture.

Compliance is heavier for vanities than for most furniture
Bathroom vanities almost always contain composite wood, the plywood boxes and any MDF fronts, which puts them squarely under the formaldehyde rules of the destination market. For the United States, that means CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI, and buyers should expect moisture-resistant, CARB-compliant panels as a baseline rather than an upgrade. The wood also has to be legal and traceable, which brings in species declaration under the Lacey Act and, for the EU, the deforestation rules. FSC certification is a strong signal on the wood and increasingly expected by upper-market buyers. A vanity factory that produces this documentation without friction has told you something important about how it operates.
A vanity is a system, not an item
One more thing buyers underestimate. A vanity program is rarely just a cabinet. It usually arrives with a stone, quartz, or engineered top, a sink, faucet cut-outs, and hardware, and each of those is its own supply decision with its own quality and lead-time questions. The countertop in particular is a separate material and often a separate supplier, and the fit between top and cabinet is where a sloppy program shows. It also drives lead time, because stone and quartz frequently move on a different schedule from the cabinet, and a program that does not coordinate the two ends up with cabinets waiting on tops, or the reverse. Treating the vanity as a coordinated system, rather than a box you add a top to later, is part of sourcing it well, and it is closer to collection development than to placing a single order.
Why Brazil, and what to verify
Brazil is a strong origin for solid wood vanities for the same reasons it is strong across wood furniture: real species depth, a planted-forest base, kiln-drying capacity, and a woodworking tradition that runs deep. Before you commit, confirm that a supplier can:
- Use solid hardwood fronts and frames over furniture-grade, moisture-resistant plywood boxes, and name the species.
- Kiln-dry to a moisture content specified for your destination climate, and document it.
- Seal every cut edge and every face, including the interior and the plumbing openings.
- Supply CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI documentation for composite parts, and FSC and species and origin records for the wood.
- Hold that quality across a full production run, not just a sample.
