Water is the enemy of almost every furniture material, and outdoor and bathroom pieces live with it constantly. Brazil happens to be one of the best-positioned countries in the world to solve that problem, because it grows, at real scale, several of the hardest and most naturally water-resistant hardwoods anywhere. This guide to Brazilian woods for outdoor and bathroom furniture covers five species genuinely suited to wet, exposed conditions, what actually makes each one durable, and how to specify the right one for a project rather than defaulting to whichever name is most familiar.
Why some woods survive water and most do not
Two different properties protect wood from water damage, and they are not the same thing, which is why comparing species by a single number is misleading. Density and hardness, measured by the Janka hardness scale, determine how well a wood resists denting, scratching, and physical wear. Natural oil content and cellular structure determine how well a wood resists rot, fungus, and moisture absorption in the first place, independent of how hard it is. The species that dominate marine and outdoor use in Brazil combine these properties in different ratios, and understanding which property is doing the work for each one changes how you specify and maintain the piece.

Ipê: the hardest of the five, and the benchmark

Ipê, also known internationally as Brazilian walnut, carries a Janka hardness rating of roughly 3,680 lbf, among the highest of any commercial timber and dense enough that the wood sinks in water. That density is where its durability comes from directly: it resists denting, scratching, insects, and fungal decay by being physically too dense and closed-grained for most threats to penetrate. Properly installed, Ipê outdoor pieces are commonly rated to last several decades with minimal maintenance, sometimes up to seventy-five years. It also carries a Class A surface burning classification under ASTM E84, the Steiner tunnel test used across US building codes: a flame spread index inside the 0–25 band and smoke development at or below 450, achieved untreated, with no fire-retardant chemistry applied. Class A is the same classification concrete and steel receive under that test, and very few wood species reach it on their own. The tradeoff is workability and price. Cumaru: nearly as hard, meaningfully less expensive

Cumaru, marketed internationally as Brazilian teak despite being unrelated botanically to true teak, rates close behind Ipê at roughly 3,540 Janka, hard enough that the two are frequently compared directly. Cumaru shares Ipê’s natural resistance to rot, insects, and moisture without chemical treatment, and it typically costs twenty to thirty percent less, which makes it the more common choice when a project wants Ipê-level performance without the full top-tier cost. Its warmer, more golden-brown tone, deepening with age, gives it a slightly different aesthetic than Ipê’s darker, more uniform color, worth considering alongside the cost difference when specifying.
Cumaru also carries the same Class A classification under ASTM E84, untreated, which changes the calculation on any project where a fire rating is driving the specification. Buyers frequently arrive at Ipê because someone identified it as the fire-rated option and stopped looking. It is not the only one, and paying the Ipê premium to obtain a rating that Cumaru already carries is one of the more common avoidable costs we see on outdoor programs.
Teak: the outlier, durable through oil rather than hardness

Teak is the exception in this group, and worth explaining clearly because its reputation can be misread. Genuine teak’s Janka hardness sits around 1,000 to 1,070 lbf, considerably softer than any of the other four species here, including Garapeira. What makes teak the traditional standard for marine and outdoor furniture is not density, it is an unusually high natural oil content that repels water and resists rot independent of hardness, the same property that has made it the preferred material for yacht decking for centuries. That oil content also gives teak the most refined, evenly grained appearance of the group and the highest price, since genuine teak, native to Southeast Asia, is not a Brazilian species and reaches Brazilian furniture makers as an imported material rather than a domestic one. For a project that specifically wants teak’s look and marine pedigree, it remains an excellent choice. For a project sourcing exclusively Brazilian species, Cumaru is often positioned as the closer domestic equivalent, which is part of why it carries “Brazilian teak” as a trade name despite the botanical difference.
Itaúba: the value alternative with real performance

Itaúba is less internationally known than the other species here, and it fills a specific role: a genuine Ipê alternative at a meaningfully lower cost. Its Janka hardness runs around 1,900 lbf, roughly half of Ipê’s, which places it below Cumaru and Ipê in pure wear resistance but still well ahead of most domestic hardwoods used outdoors elsewhere. It shares the same fungal and insect resistance that defines the broader Brazilian hardwood family, and where Ipê might be expected to perform for seventy-five years or more, Itaúba is more realistically rated for several decades, a tradeoff many outdoor and bathroom applications do not need the full extra service life to justify. It is also easier to work with than Ipê, which shortens fabrication time and reduces tooling costs for the factory, a saving that shows up in the final piece.
Garapeira: the accessible entry point

Garapeira, also sold as Garapa or Brazilian ash, is the least dense of the five, with a Janka hardness in the range of 1,630 to 1,650 lbf. It is still meaningfully harder and more durable than most temperate hardwoods used outdoors, and its natural resistance to rot and insects holds up well for the price. Its lighter, more yellow-toned appearance is a genuine style choice rather than a compromise, well suited to brighter, more casual outdoor settings than the darker tones of Ipê or Cumaru, and it is the most budget-accessible of the group, which is reflected in its position as the standard alternative when a project needs real hardwood performance without the cost of the top-tier species.
Fire rating: which of these species carry Class A, and what the rating actually covers
Fire performance is the one specification where buyers most often anchor on a single species name, and it is worth separating what the rating measures from what a project actually has to document.
In the United States, surface burning is measured by ASTM E84, commonly called the Steiner tunnel test. It produces two numbers: a flame spread index and a smoke developed index. A material earns Class A with a flame spread index of 0 to 25 and smoke development of 450 or below. Class B covers 26 to 75, Class C covers 76 to 200. The distinction matters because Class A is frequently written into hospitality and institutional specifications, and a buyer told that only one species qualifies will pay accordingly.
Several Brazilian hardwoods reach Class A untreated. Ipê and Cumaru both test in the Class A band with no chemical treatment applied, and Garapa, Massaranduba and Tigerwood are also documented in that range. The density and closed grain structure that give these species their rot and insect resistance are the same properties that slow surface flame spread, which is why the characteristic clusters in this family of woods rather than appearing in one species alone.
Three things determine whether that rating survives contact with a real submittal.
The test has to match the finished piece. An E84 report on a bare board does not automatically describe a table with a sealer or a UV-protective oil on it. Where a finish is part of the specification, the documentation should reflect the finished assembly, not the raw substrate. This is the single most common gap we find when reviewing fire documentation on furniture programs.
Naturally rated wood and coated wood are not equivalent solutions. A Class A intumescent coating applied over a species that does not carry the rating on its own can satisfy a specification on paper, but outdoors it introduces a maintenance obligation the specification rarely accounts for: intumescent systems degrade under UV exposure and cleaning cycles and require recoating on a schedule. On hospitality furniture, that becomes a warranty conversation. A species that carries the rating inherently does not create that exposure.
Documentation is supplier-specific, not species-specific. A published rating for a species is a reason to investigate a supplier, not a substitute for that supplier’s own current test report tied to the material actually shipping. Any factory exporting into the US market at scale should be able to produce one. A factory that cannot is telling you something about the order.
Buyers should also confirm what is driving the requirement in the first place, because it changes what the submittal needs. An interior finish requirement enforced by the authority having jurisdiction, a wildland-urban interface zone requirement, and a hotel brand standard each call for different documentation, and the species decision follows from that rather than preceding it.
Maintenance expectations by species
None of these five species is maintenance-free, and setting the right expectation with a client or a customer matters as much as choosing the species itself. Left untreated, Ipê and Cumaru both weather naturally to a silver-gray patina over time, a look many buyers actually prefer, while an annual or biennial application of UV-protective oil preserves the original darker tone for buyers who want it. Teak follows a similar weathering pattern but is more commonly left to gray naturally given its traditional marine aesthetic, and its oil content means it tolerates neglect better than harder species with less natural oil. Itaúba and Garapeira both benefit from the same periodic oiling as Ipê and Cumaru if the original color is to be preserved, and skipping maintenance on any of the five will not compromise structural durability, only the surface appearance over time.
Matching the species to the application
Bathroom vanities and outdoor furniture stress wood differently, and the right species depends on which stress matters more for a given piece.

What buyers get wrong when specifying by species name alone
Species is only the starting point of a real specification. Moisture content at the time of shipping, matched to the destination climate rather than left generic, matters as much as the species chosen, since even the most water-resistant hardwood can move if it was not conditioned for a dry, air-conditioned interior or a very different outdoor climate than where it was milled. This is a genuine risk specific to sourcing rather than to the wood itself: a piece built and dried in a humid Brazilian coastal factory and shipped to a dry, heated northern climate can crack or open at the joints, not because the species failed, but because the moisture content was never specified for its destination.
Finish and sealing decisions, whether a piece is left to weather naturally or maintained with periodic oiling, change the maintenance profile significantly regardless of species. And species names are inconsistently applied across suppliers, with trade names like “Brazilian teak” or “Brazilian walnut” sometimes used loosely enough that verifying the actual botanical species, not just the marketing name on an invoice, is worth doing before a large order. A supplier unable to confirm the scientific name behind a trade name is a signal worth taking seriously, particularly given how much the actual performance varies between species that share a marketing name but nothing else.
